How to use the Total Orders attribute in segments
Total Orders is a great attribute to use when you want to identify and target customers who have made a certain number of purchases.
For example, you may want to see all single-order customers who have made a purchase in the last 30 days. To do so, navigate to the Segment Builder and then add the following attributes to the PROFILES MUST HAVE ALL OF THESE section of the builder:
- Total Orders > Between > 1 and 1
- Order Date > In the Last > 30 days
Now you have a dynamic segment of single-order customers ready to activate for your growth and retention strategies.
This attribute is also great to use when you want to identify your high-value customers.
To start building this segment, run a general search in the Segment Builder using the All Customers segment.
Now, move to the right of the Segment Builder, and under EXPLORE ATTRIBUTES filter by Total Orders. Click into this attribute.
Once you've clicked on the attribute, scroll down to Summary Statistics and you'll find the average number of total orders across your whole customer base. In this example it's 1.88 orders.
This is for all customers though, so you might determine that based off this information your high-value customers should have an average of 3+ orders to be considered in this segment.
Going back to the Segment Builder, you can now start to build your high-value customer segment.
Start by adding the Total Orders attribute to the PROFILES MUST HAVE ALL OF THESE section of the builder, and add the following filter: Greater than or equal to 3.
It's always best practice to target your "active" customers for these kinds of segments as well, so you can also add the Order Date attribute to the builder and add the following filter: In the Last > 12 Months.
You could always add more attributes to this segment too, to really hone in on your high-value shoppers, for example:
- Total Spend
- Product Name or Product Category
- Email Open Rate
- Email Click Rate
Once you've finished, save your segment, and it's ready to activate!
